Currently Coveting: The Little Black Dress.
I’ve been invited to two weddings so far this summer– and the list is growing. It seems that every summer and spring, I get innudated with all types of engagement and wedding announcements, along with baby showers, and blah blah blah. I’m starting to see the downside of being the youngest in my peer group. This is what happens when all of your friends are at the minimum, five years older than you are. They all get old, and want to settle down, and be grownups with each other.
So not ready for that personally.
That being said, I’ve been on the lookout for something simple that I can wear and resuse again. I’ve never actually owned a LBD– so I’m kinda excited by this prospect. Fact: the only dress I currently own is a gray tennis dress from AA that makes me look like a sausage whenever I wear it. And I’m 5′3″. And that’s a large. I love you American Apparel, but you obviously have no idea what a woman’s body looks like.
Also before anyone chimes in. As of right now, the weddings are both at night– and one of the brides has declared a black-and-white themed wedding. So blah blah blah, and if you know me– you should know that I dress in predominantly dark shades, most of it being black anyway.
Some of my favorites (you know if money was no object):

Rachel Pally’s “Leigh Dress”

VaVa’s “Akoya Mini”"
I’m afraid if I get something like this. It might make me look more “doll-like” than I already do. I’m a grown-ass woman, not a child– so why do I insist on dressing like 1994 Courtney Love most of the time?

Le Train Bleu’s “Tippi Dress”
Probably not wedding appropriate right? But look, pockets! Christ, I have no idea what I’m doing.

Banana Republic’s “Studded Dress”
This might merit some in-store inspection, as I am pretty much sold on anything that has studs, or zippers, or anything vaguely “punk rawk” on it. I simply cannot help myself.

Vince’s “Felted Tunic”
I just really like cap sleeves. Though I’m always concerned for the models at Shopbop; they always look uncomfortable and awkward*, and are usually trying to pull down their dresses– is the dress really that short? Or are the models these crazy-tall Amazon women? Or is there a simply fabric shortage that I’m not aware of. Is that what you’re trying to do, Vince? Ration out that fabric?

Susan Monaco’s “Open Back Boat Neck Dress”
I love the back detail on this. Too bad– all the sizes left are too big for me.

Alexander Wang’s “Boiled Wool Dress”
Like the shape, but unfortunately, I am built like a plank– so I’m pretty sure this will make me look like a fuzzy version of Ultimate Spider-man*.

Alexander Wang’s Layered Tank Dress
* Though the biggest offender by far of this is American Apparel.
* For those of you who aren’t avid comicbook geeks, the Ultimate Universe (or Earth 1610) Spider-man is still a teenager and very small, and wiry looking sixteen-year-old, as opposed to the 616 universe where Pete is very much a grown man who’s in his late 20s/early 30s.
